Former Assemblyman John Salka Launches Congressional Bid for 2026

MADISON COUNTY, NY — Former New York State Assemblyman John Salka has announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives, joining the 2026 race for New York’s 22nd Congressional District as a Republican contender.

Salka, a longtime resident of Madison County, previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2019 to 2022, representing the 121st District. Known for his conservative values and strong advocacy for rural communities, Salka brings both legislative experience and a background in healthcare as a respiratory therapist to his campaign.

"I’ve spent my life serving our community, both as a healthcare professional and as a public servant," said Salka in a statement. "Now more than ever, Central New York needs a strong voice in Washington—someone who will stand up for hardworking families, protect our freedoms, and bring common sense back to government."

Salka's entrance into the race sets up a likely challenge to Democratic incumbent John Mannion, who was elected to the 22nd District in 2024. The district, which includes key portions of Central New York, is expected to be one of the more competitive battlegrounds in the 2026 midterms.
